One of my favorite books as a child was Bread and Jam for Frances. I loved the little songs that Francis was always making up and the way she always made her food come out just right. As an adult and parent, I appreciate her parents' patience and ability to let Francis learn from her mistakes.
Summer Reading Program
It's summer! It's time to relax, spend time outside, visit friends, and enjoy your time as a family. Bud don't stop reading! Make reading a part of your family's summer fun.
This year Center Woods Elementary School is promoting "famiy reading" by joining again with Weare Public Library's summer reading program - Fizz, Boom, Read. We are hoping that each child will keep track of how many minutes they read over the summer. Our goal is for each child to read a minimum of 1,000 minutes. That's only about 15 minutes each day!
*Any child who reads a minimum of 1000 minutes will receive a $5 gift certificate to spend at the fall book fair.
*Any student who returns their summer reading log will be able to pick a prize from our prize bucket.
FUNDATIONS (See description below) is now part of our Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd Grade whole class curriculum. Fundations directly addresses phonemic awareness and phonics and will suppliment our Houghton Mifflin Reading Program. Mrs. Killion, Mrs. Moore and Mrs. Khan will be working closely with our 2nd Grade Teachers as we get this new program off the ground.
Fundations is a subprogram of the Wilson Reading System. It addresses phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. Like the Wilson Reading System, Fundations uses a number of multi-sensory techniques that are combined into activities during phonics instruction intended to heighten students' awareness to word structure with the ultimate goal of increasing fluent decoding and automatic word recognition. Fluency development is approached with activities designed to increase speed, accuracy, and expressiveness. Visualization is taught as a specific comprehension strategy using decodable text and literature at the students' independent and instructional levels.
